Tucson's Etch A Sketch fountain

Tucson's Etch A Sketch fountain

The fountain at the southeast corner of the Fourth Avenue underpass is built of plain steel grids with water that trickles down their faces into stone-filled basins. It didn't take long after the fountain was constructed for passersby to begin using the stones to create art.

Love messages are the most popular, with hearts and names of the couple. But I've seen landscapes and animals and messages I could not decipher. The art rarely last more than a few days before someone comes along and changes everything.

The fountains were designed by Kevin Osborn as part of the re-construction of the Fourth Avenue underpass nearly eight years ago.
